Top places to experience
Alaidegi Wildlife Reserve
A broad grassland landscape with wildlife including Grevy’s zebra, wild ass, gerenuk, dik-dik, warthog and many bird species. It also offers an opportunity to experience the wider Afar environment beyond the desert.
Awash National Park
One of Ethiopia’s best-known nature reserves, with arid woodland, savannah and riverine forest around the Awash River. Wildlife and birdlife make it a strong addition to an Afar-focused itinerary.
Danakil Depression
An extraordinary geological landscape shaped by active tectonic and volcanic processes. Salt flats, colourful mineral formations, hot springs and extreme desert scenery give the area its otherworldly character.
Erta Ale Volcano
A basaltic shield volcano in the Danakil Depression, famous for persistent lava-lake activity. It is one of the region’s signature adventure destinations.
